The aims of this book are manifold. Firstly, it is meant to present a synthesis of architectural classifications universal for all growth forms. Secondly, it introduces architectural categories relevant for temperate herbs. And thirdly, it illustrates these architectural categories using examples from Central Europe. As the flora of Central Europe is dominated by herbs, the book is devoted to this growth form, and since nearly all important architectural elements are located on their below ground perennial organs, the roots and rhizomes are the main focus of the book. This is in contrast with architectural studies of woody species, which are derived from aboveground plant architecture.
